The Ship Brooklyn left Brooklyn Harbor on 4 Feb. 1846. Primarily carrying Mormons seeking religious freedom, Brooklyn sailed around South America. Most of the 238 passengers were young adults with small children. The group's leader was Samuel Brannan, who later became prominent in California history.
